How to reach Ambikapur: by train, road and air

Getting to Ambikapur in Surguja, Chhattisgarh: the direct trains from Durg, Bilaspur and Jabalpur, overnight buses from Raipur, road distances from nearby cities, and what to know about flights.

Ambikapur is the headquarters of Surguja district, in the hilly north of Chhattisgarh, close to the borders with Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. It feels remote on a map, but it is well connected by rail and road. For most visitors the easiest route is an overnight train or bus, arriving fresh in the morning.

The short answer

From Best way Rough time
Raipur, Durg, Bilaspur Overnight Durg–Ambikapur Express, or an overnight bus One night
Jabalpur, Katni Jabalpur–Ambikapur Intercity About 10 hours
Delhi Direct train on select days, or fly to Raipur and continue by train or road Long journey; plan a night
Ranchi, Varanasi By road 6 to 8 hours

By train

Ambikapur railway station (code ABKP) is the end of a branch line from Anuppur Junction in Madhya Pradesh, about 174 km away by rail. It is part of the Bilaspur division of South East Central Railway. If no direct train suits you, travel to Anuppur and change there.

The main direct trains are:

  • Durg–Ambikapur Express (18241 / 18242): the most useful train for travellers from Durg, Raipur and Bilaspur. It runs daily overnight in both directions, reaching Ambikapur in the morning.
  • Jabalpur–Ambikapur Intercity (11265 / 11266): a daily day train linking Ambikapur with Jabalpur and Katni.
  • Shahdol–Ambikapur Express (18755 / 18756): a daily link with Shahdol and Anuppur.
  • Ambikapur–Hazrat Nizamuddin Superfast (22407 / 22408): a direct train to and from Delhi on select days of the week.
  • Local MEMU trains to Anuppur, Shahdol and Manendragarh.

Timings and running days do change, so check them on the official NTES or IRCTC sites before you book. Trains fill up quickly around Navratri, Diwali and the wedding season, so book early.

By road

Three national highways meet at Ambikapur:

  • NH130 runs south to Bilaspur and on towards Raipur.
  • NH43 connects Ranchi (via Jashpur) on one side and Manendragarh and the Anuppur area on the other.
  • NH343 heads northeast towards Ramanujganj and Garhwa in Jharkhand.

Approximate road distances to Ambikapur:

From Distance
Raipur 335–345 km
Bilaspur 220–225 km
Korba about 177 km
Anuppur about 207 km
Ranchi about 290 km
Varanasi about 315 km
Jabalpur about 407 km

Buses: buses connect Ambikapur with Raipur, Bilaspur, Durg, Korba and Raigarh, with daily services to Varanasi, Renukoot and Garhwa Road as well. From Raipur, overnight AC sleeper buses take about 8 to 9 hours, leaving late in the evening and arriving early the next morning. From Bilaspur the journey is about 5 to 6 hours.

Driving yourself: the road through the hills is scenic but winding in places. Start early, avoid night driving if you don’t know the route, and keep fuel topped up between towns.

By air

Ambikapur has its own airport, Maa Mahamaya Airport at Darima, south of the city. It was inaugurated in October 2024, but scheduled flights have been limited and have changed several times since then: routes have been added, reduced and withdrawn.

Before planning around a flight, check the current schedule with Alliance Air or a booking site. The dependable alternative is to fly into Raipur (Swami Vivekananda Airport), the nearest major airport, and continue by the overnight train from Raipur or Durg, a bus, or a taxi. Bilaspur airport, 220–225 km away by road, is another option on some routes.
